NCWS Belonging in Nursing PosterSixty-three percent of nurses have personally experienced racism in the workforce, and 56 percent of nurses say that “racism in the workplace has negatively impacted their professional well-being.” This research surveyed Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) nurses to understand how racism has affected their work experience. These findings are unfortunate but can also help us understand how to build more inclusive and belonging environments for nurses. The research found that BIPOC Nurses who feel supported in their organization lead to increased provider satisfaction and may result in improved healthcare outcomes for their patients.

In conclusion, diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts should lead to increased belonging within the workforce, and these efforts should address the four areas of awareness, knowledge, skills, and process. Download the poster

NCWS Brave Spaces PosterSafe Spaces were created to provide a sense of security and comfort but may hinder genuine growth and understanding. Brave Spaces challenge individuals to confront discomfort and engage in critical conversations that address systemic injustices and promote social change. This research team compared the concepts of safe spaces versus brave spaces in nursing and developed a Brave Spaces toolkit for those in the nursing profession. Engaging in Brave Spaces requires individuals to acknowledge their own privilege, listen to diverse perspectives, and be willing to be accountable for their actions and words.

Researchers advise those to use the Brave Space Toolkit when there are complex conversations that require understanding of diverse perspectives or that confront high stakes and contentious issues openly. Download the poster
