ForHealth Consulting Leaders Share Inspiring Thoughts During Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month, with a theme of “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations,” set by the National Women’s History Alliance.1 This theme celebrates the collective strength and influence of women who have dedicated their lives to education, mentorship, and leadership.

At ForHealth Consulting at UMass Chan Medical School, we are proud to have a legacy of strong female leadership, and we are honored to share observations and lessons from some of the leaders across our organization.

What are some lessons you have learned in your career?
Diala Nicolas

Diala Nicolas, clinical consultant pharmacist team lead, Clinical Pharmacy Services:
“Learning never stops, and every day presents an opportunity to grow. No matter how experienced you are, there is always something new to discover, and someone to learn from.”

Lisa Morris

Lisa Morris, director of cross cultural initiatives, Training & Workforce Development:
“Surrounding myself with a great team is essential for success.  Having a great work ethic helps to get the work done.  Loving what I do keeps it exciting—it gives me purpose!”

What is some advice you can share with women building their careers?
Lisa McCabe

Lisa McCabe, managing director, Health Systems Solutions:
“Never stop learning – seek out learning opportunities that expand your current knowledge. This could be in the form of taking a course, networking with others, or seeking a mentor to develop new skills and/or expand your expertise.”

Brittany Rahall

Brittany Rahall, assistant director, Public Health Initiatives, Health Care Finance Solutions:
“Change is inevitable—whether that’s in your career or your personal life. Instead of seeing change as scary, tackle it like a challenge to be accomplished and an opportunity for growth. You’ll feel more empowered when you get to the other side.”

What can women do to support each other through their journeys?
Jody Simpson

Jody Simpson, executive director, Disability Evaluation Services:
“Women can support other women by actively promoting their ideas, celebrating their achievements, facilitating connections within our networks, and by being genuinely caring for and uplifting other women.”

Carol H. Gyurina

Carol H. Gyurina, senior consultant, Health Payment Strategy and Analytics:
“Help your colleagues and former colleagues think about their life and work goals, while also finding someone who can guide your own journey. If all your work relationships are online, make sure you find 1:1 time for calls, which can be much more productive than meetings…some of the more personal professional connections may take more effort to nurture now. Take the time to do so.”

Final Words of Wisdom
  • Diala Nicolas:
Trust in your knowledge and experience and feel confident sharing your insights. Your perspective is valuable, and contributing your ideas can make a meaningful impact.”
  • Lisa Morris:
As a woman, it is important to find your voice and be assertive! Seek a mentor and work on developing your leadership skills so that you are always ready for the next step.”
  • Lisa McCabe:
“Women can support other women providing advice, feedback, and encouragement as they navigate challenges and grow professionally through their journeys. Build each other up! Recognize and support the successes of other women.
  • Jody Simpson:
Being purposeful and mindful in treating others the way you want to be treated has never steered me wrong. Always be your true and authentic self.”
  • Brittany Rahall:
“Life isn’t about perfect balance at work or at home because it will never all be balanced. It’s about showing up for each other. There will be seasons when you feel steady when the chaos quiets just enough. In those moments, extend a hand.”
  • Carol H. Gyurina:
“The projects I worked on with the most impact were run by small teams of colleagues, who brainstormed ideas, and commiserated when things were tough…Good work relationships can lead to life-long friendships, a key to both career and life happiness.”

Thank you to all of our amazing leaders at ForHealth Consulting who shared their unique insights to educate and inspire us all. Let us continue to celebrate all women for their mentorship and leadership!
