Roger Eaton, PhD, executive director of the New England Newborn Screening program based at ForHealth Consulting and associate professor of pediatrics at UMass Chan Medical School, was featured in a health segment on Vermont’s WCAX-TV about how newborns are screened for disorders.
A blood sample taken between 24 and 48 hours after birth is screened for a series of core and secondary conditions. These screenings can reveal abnormal results for dozens of conditions, but additional screening needs to be done before a diagnosis can be made.
